( Daphne ) Laserdisc MPEG: Thayer's Quest

"Thayer's Quest was a laserdisc adventure game released by RDI Video Systems in 1984 as a game for their Halcyon console, computer and laserdisc player, but was later released as a conversion kit for Dragon's Lair arcade consoles when the Halcyon's high price tag damaged its appeal.

The game was fully animated like Dragon's Lair but required more than simply choosing when to fight or which way to dodge in accordance with the animation. Instead the player had full control over Thayer's movement to different areas and was required to find and use a variety of magical objects to overcome enemies and obstacles like in most later graphic adventure games." ( Daphne ) Laserdisc MPEG: Super Don Quix-ote + Super Don Quix-ote [re-encoded]

"Super Don Quix-ote is a laserdisc video game released by Universal in 1984. It was the first and only game released for the Universal System 1, a standardized laser disc video game system.

The game is very loosely inspired by its namesake, Don Quixote, and features a young man on a quest to save his girlfriend Isabella from an evil witch. Don is accompanied on his travels by a donkey (probably based on "Rocinante", the original Don Quixote's horse), and an unnamed, fat little man (presumably Sancho Panza). The closest parallel to the original story is a scene in which Don fights a giant at a windmill, but the rest of the game pits Don against a mummy, giant snakes, flying electric jellyfish, a totem pole, and other scenarios with no relation to the original story. The game ends when Don Quixote kills the witch and rescues Isabella.

Gameplay-wise, Super Don Quix-ote was very similar to Dragon's Lair; the button controlled the hero's sword and, in most cases, failing a scene would advance you to the next scene, with the failed scene showing up again later in the game. The major difference that set Super Don Quix-ote apart from previous laserdisc video games was the fact that an overlaid icon would indicate the time and direction of each correct input, whereas all other laserdisc games at the time gave no indication of correct moves, except an occasional "flash" incorporated into the animation itself." Sinclair ZX Spectrum - All 68 TOSEC romsets

"The Sinclair ZX Spectrum is an 8-bit personal home computer released in the United Kingdom in 1982 by Sinclair Research Ltd. Referred to during development as the ZX81 Colour and ZX82, the machine was launched as the ZX Spectrum by Sinclair to highlight the machine's colour display, compared with the black-and-white of its predecessor, the Sinclair ZX81.

Crazy Cars II
Crazy Cars II (ZX-Spectrum)

The Spectrum was among the first mainstream audience home computers in the UK, similar in significance to the Commodore 64 in the USA; the C64 was a major rival to the Spectrum in the UK market during the early 1980s. The BBC Microcomputer and later the Amstrad CPC-range were other major competitors.

Obliterator
Obliterator (ZX-Spectrum)

The ZX Spectrum was released in eight different models, ranging from the 16K entry level model with 16 KB RAM released in 1982 to the ZX Spectrum +3 with 128 KB RAM and built in floppy disk drive in 1987. The introduction of the ZX Spectrum led to a boom in companies producing software and hardware for the machine, the effects of which are still seen; some credit it as the machine which launched the UK IT industry. Licensing deals and clones followed, and earned Clive Sinclair a knighthood for "services to British industry"." (Wikipedia)

Hewlett-Packard HP49 2 x TOSEC

"The HP 49G series are Hewlett-Packard (HP) manufactured graphing calculators. They are the successors of the HP-48 series, one of the best-selling calculator ranges among engineers, scientists, and students.

There are now four calculators in the 49 series of HP graphing calculators. These calculators all have both algebraic and RPN entry modes, and can perform numeric and symbolic calculations using the built-in Computer Algebra System (CAS), which is an improved ALG48 and Erable combination from the HP-48 series.

The 49 series is often compared to the Texas Instruments' TI-89 series. Speed of calculation varies between the systems — generally the TI-89 series CAS (based on Texas Instruments' Derive engine) outperforms the HP-49G series CAS in areas such as simultaneous equation solving, integration and symbolic matrix manipulation; however, the 49 series is generally faster in other areas, such as 3D plot generation, series expansion and numeric matrix manipulation." "The HP-48 is a series of graphing calculators using Reverse Polish notation (RPN) and the RPL programming language, produced by Hewlett-Packard (HP) from 1990 until 2003. The series include the HP-48S, HP-48SX, HP-48G, HP-48GX, and HP-48G+, the G models being expanded and improved versions of the S models. The models with an X suffix are expandable via special RAM (memory expansion) and ROM (software application) cards. In particular, the GX models have more onboard memory than the G models. The G+ models have more onboard memory only. The SX and S models have the same amount of onboard memory." (Wikipedia)

Exidy Sorcerer: 3 x TOSEC

"The Sorcerer was first launched in 1978 (although some sources claim 1977, which appears unlikely), at a price of $895. It was powered by a Z80 running at 2.106 MHz with 8 kilobytes of RAM. The expansion systems and drives were released at the same time.

Sales in Europe were fairly strong, via their distributor, CompuData Systems. The machine had its biggest brush with success in 1979 when the Dutch broadcasting company, TELEAC, decided to introduce their own home computer. The Belgian company DAI was originally contracted to design their machines, but when they couldn't deliver, CompuData delivered several thousand Sorcerers instead.

By 1980 Exidy had already decided to give up on the machine, but sales in Europe were strong enough that CompuData decided to license the design for local construction in the Netherlands. They built the machine for several years before developing their own 16-bit Intel 8088–based machine called the Tulip, which replaced the Sorcerer in 1983.

One of the largest groups in The Netherlands was the ESGG (Exidy Sorcerer Gebruikers Groep) which published a monthly newsletter in two editions, Dutch and English. They were the largest group for a while in the HCC (Hobby Computer Club) federation. The Dutch company De Broeders Montfort was a major firmware manufacturerer.

The Sorcerer also had a strong following in Australia. This is most likely due to Dick Smith Electronics, being a leading electronics and hobbyist retailer at the time, pushing the Sorcerer quite heavily. The Sorcerer Computer Users group of Australia (or SCUA) actively supported the Sorcerer long after Exidy discontinued it, with RAM upgrades, speed boosts, the "80 column card", and even a replacement monitor program, SCUAMON."

The history of the Sorcerer has interesting parallels with Exidy's competition's attempts to build a home computer, Bally's various attempts at making a "real" machine out of the Astrocade. It is particularly interesting that while the Astrocade (and Datamax UV-1) had limited text capabilities but excellent graphics, the Sorcerer instead had excellent text and only "usable" graphics." ETL Mark: 3 x TOSEC

"The ETL Mark VI Transistor Computer was completed at the Electrotechnical Laboratory in March 1966. The project began in 1959, and in order to achieve a machine surpassing the ultra-high speed machines of the time from overseas, it was supported with a budget of ¥100 million (20 times that of the Mark IV), and a variety of new technologies were developed for this machine including: high-speed transistor-based basic circuits, high-speed magnetic core memory, a page address system, a high-speed high-capacity fixed memory unit, a sophisticated lookahead control system, high-speed arithmetic circuits, and an input/output control system employing interrupt technology. The high-speed basic circuits were dynamic circuits employing a 2-phase clock pulse with a combination of transistor current switches and emitter followers. Electromagnetic delay lines were used for the short delays not involving logic. These technologies were used in a slightly changed form in the HITAC 5020 from Hitachi."(museum.ipsj.or.jp)

Enterprise 64 & 128: 2 x TOSEC

"The Enterprise is a Zilog Z80 based home computer first released in 1985. There are two variants, the Enterprise 64 with 64 kB of RAM, and the Enterprise 128 with 128 kB. The machine was also known by the names DPC, Samurai, Oscar, Elan and Flan before the Enterprise name was finally chosen.

The machine has a Z80 CPU running at 4 MHz, 64 kB or 128 kB of RAM and 48 kB of ROM containing the EXOS operating system and BASIC. The case is unique for its time (in the UK at least) for containing both a full-sized membrane keyboard with programmable function keys, and a joystick.

The machine was specifically engineered for games, with a up to 672×256 pixel display and up to 256 colours per pixel (in 180x80 mode, one byte per pixel being particularly easy to program). Sound was 4 channels, stereo. A graphics coprocessor called "Nick" and sound coprocessor called "Dave" (named after the designers Nick Toop, who had previously worked on the Acorn Atom, and Dave Woodfield) takes the load off the central processor.

The machine came with a surprising array of connectors, far beyond what was common on home computers of the time. There is an RGB output, RS232/RS432 serial port, a Centronics printer port, two external joystick ports, a cassette interface, a ROM cartridge slot and an ordinary expansion port. (To save money, however, the connectors on the rear did not come with sockets. They simply exposed traces on the edge of the printed circuit board).

The BASIC ROM can even be replaced by a ROM which can emulate a ZX Spectrum, thus in theory allowing the Enterprise to run the existing catalogue of thousands of Spectrum games. Later, an external floppy drive became available, supporting CP/M programs." (Wikipedia)

SNK - Neo Geo Pocket (No-Intro 20090212)

"The Neo Geo Pocket was SNK's first hand held video game system, released in Japan in late 1998; however, lower than expected sales resulted in its discontinuation in 1999, and was immediately succeeded by the Neo Geo Pocket Color. The system only had a retail release within the Japan and Hong Kong market.

Though the system enjoyed only a short life, there were some significant games released on the system such as Samurai Shodown, and King of Fighters R-1. The entire Neo Geo Pocket game library included: Melan Chan's Growth Diary, Puzzle Link, Pocket Tennis, Neo Cup 98, Neo Cup 98 plus, King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown, Master of Syougi, Neo Cherry Master, Baseball Stars.

The Neo Geo Pocket is mostly forward compatible, meaning it can play the majority of the newer color games. There are, however, notable exceptions such as Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure and SNK vs. Capcom: Match Of The Millennium. The newer Neo Geo Pocket Color is fully backward compatible and can play all games released for the Neo Geo Pocket." (Wikipedia)

SNK - Neo Geo Pocket Color (No-Intro 20090208)

"The Neo-Geo Pocket Color (or NGPC) was released on March 16, 1999 in Japan and was released in the United States on August 6, 1999. It was a 16-bit color hand held game console designed by SNK, the makers of the Neo Geo home console and arcade machine. It came after SNK's original Neo Geo Pocket monochrome handheld, which debuted in 1998 in Japan. In 2000, following SNK's purchase by Japanese Pachinko manufacturer Aruze, the Neo Geo Pocket Color was dropped from both the United States and European markets due to poor commercial performance, also aided by poor third-party co-operation." ( Daphne ) Laserdisc MPEG: Space Ace + Space Ace 1991

"Space Ace is a laserdisc video game produced by Don Bluth Studios, Cinematronics, and Advanced Microcomputer Systems (later renamed RDI Video Systems). It was unveiled in October 1983, just four months after the Dragon's Lair game, then released in Spring 1984, and like its predecessor featured film-quality animation played back from a laserdisc. The gameplay too is similar, requiring the player to move the joystick or press the fire button at key moments in the animated sequences to govern the hero's actions." (Wikipedia)

Commodore VIC10 TOSEC

Strange romset. We couldn't find any information about such a computer. There is a couple of picture and a short info on a Japanese website:

"According to some sources this computer was only distributed in Japan. A cheap computer for beginners but european/american companies were never really successful in Japan and the VC10 was not an exception."

And in the the TOSEC name there is Commodore VIC10 ...

( Daphne ) Laserdisc MPEG: Mach 3 + Mach 3 [resized]

"In M.A.C.H. 3, you pilot either a "Fighter" plane or a "Bomber" plane and must fly around hitting targets on the ground or in the air while avoiding enemy fire. M.A.C.H. 3 used video footage from the laser disc and overlaid computer graphics for your ship and the enemy ships.

In order to record the video footage for the game, a specially designed plane was used that had cameras mounted on the nose and in the belly. To keep the video from the laser disc player and computer graphics in sync, target data had to be entered by hand one frame at a time on the right audio track of the laser disc. This was a very time consuming process but was worth the effort, as M.A.C.H. 3 was one of the most successful laser disc games of all time." (Dragon's Lair Project)

NEC PC-8801: 4 x TOSEC

"The NEC PC-8801 system was introduced by the NEC Corporation in 1981 and was an early Zilog Z80-based computer. The PC-88, as it is informally called, became very popular in Japan but did not see release in other markets." (Wikipedia)

VTech Laser 200 - 9 x TOSEC

"The VTech Laser 200 was an early 8-bit home computer from 1983, also sold as the Salora Fellow (mainly in Scandinavia, particularly Finland), the Texet TX8000 (in the United Kingdom) and the Dick Smith VZ 200 (in Australia and New Zealand).

It was designed and built by Video Technology (VTech) in Hong Kong and derived from the Tandy TRS-80. Based on a Zilog Z80A CPU driven by a television colour burst crystal (3.5795454 MHz), it offered 16 KB of ROM containing Microsoft BASIC, 8 KB RAM and four-colour graphics at a resolution of 128×64 or 64×32, or 32 columns and 16 lines of eight-colour text.

The Laser 200 used the MC6847 Video Display Generator (VDG) chip for graphics.

At its UK launch, Texet claimed that the £98 TX8000-branded version was the cheapest colour home microcomputer on the market. However, this was not enough to ensure its success against the dominant ZX Spectrum and similar machines already on sale. Most notably, the Spectrum-like Oric 1 was selling for £99 at this point, and offered a far higher specification than the Texet for little difference in cost.

The "Dick Smith"-badged VZ 200 was more successful in Australia, where it proved popular as a first computer.

The machine ran some basic games on cassette such as Frogger, Scramble, Space Invaders and Moon Patrol.

An improved version known as the VTech Laser 310, or the Dick Smith VZ 300 was released later." (Wikipedia)
